Jon Wilkin reveals the team he thinks has spent the most money in Super League history

Jon Wilkin has had his say on the side he believes has spent the most in Super League history.

Plenty of teams, especially the top teams, have spent big in the past with some major transfer fees from Leeds Rhinos for Iestyn Harris, St Helens for Paul Sculthorpe and Wigan Warriors for Stuart Fielden.

Hull FC and Catalans Dragons have also been known to splash the cash but in the opinion of Wilkin, it is Warrington who have spent the most and he feels this adds more pressure on the Wolves in 2023.

He said on Sky Sports: “If Daryl Powell didn’t address the slump in form quickly then quite simply in sport, you’re out.

“Sport is not sentimental and romantic, it is performance based. Ultimately, this Warrington team have a tough first five fixtures, they didn’t perform last year at all.

“They finished second bottom last year. They have opened the cheque book, there won’t be a team, I believe, that has spent more than Warrington in Super League history and they’ve done that again.

“He’s going to have to get results because if it gets to March 17th and they’re playing Leigh and they lose on the back of more losses, that could be a very difficult conversation for Daryl Powell.”

That said he did state that he is hopeful for the Wolves in 2023: “I’m hopeful for Warrington this year, they’ve made some unbelievable signings.”

This came after he reflected on their 2022 season:

“They flopped massively last year, they were like Paul Pogba at Manchester United.

“They built up Daryl Powell going in but it just didn’t happen and there’s loads of reasons why.

“But what he has done is he’s built up a very exciting squad for this coming year. He has some big boppers in there.”
