Jon Wilkin on the player who is the “future of rugby league”

Yesterday we saw Jack Welsby at his best in an England shirt as he featured at fullback, his preferred position, for the first time and worked wonders for England’s attack.

Not only does he offer skill but he also has amazing physical attributes which is what caught the eye of Jon Wilkin commentating on Sky Sports as he said:

“He is lethal, his speed his lethal and I think his partnership with George Williams has been lethal.

“Jack Welsby is dynamite at fullback.”

However, he believes Welsby can play anywhere in rugby league which is an attribute that makes him the future of rugby league because of the growing versatility in the sport.

He said: “He has a high rugby IQ. He is the future of rugby. He can play any position. We talk about him playing fullback but he can play anywhere.

“He played loose-forward for St Helens against Hull KR. He can play centre, wing and in the halves.

“That is the future of what rugby looks likes.”

Interestingly, Welsby is yet to play at fullback in a Grand Final.

He was forced to play in the halves last season due to the injury to Lewis Dodd. In 2021, he started on the bench whilst in 2020 he of course made his name with the winning try playing centre in place of the injured Mark Percival.

There was better players then Welsby on that pitch yesterday take ya nuts outta his mouth Wilkin, i saw him fluff at two high kicks and get away with it. He’s good at staying on the floor and trying to milk a pen or get a set restart.
