It is possible that former St Helens man Jon Wilkin could be a little biased but he believes this current St Helens side is one of the best sporting teams Britain has produced in recent years.
Speaking on Sky Sports News yesterday, Wilkin said: “It was a massive result for St Helens, it was an incredible performance from a team I think is one of the best sporting teams this country has seen for some time and to beat the Penrith Panthers, the Champions of Australia who have been so dominant, to go and beat them with limited resources from Super League.
“It is incredible and it is an amazing start to the year.
“It means so much for rugby league, it needs a spotlight on it and it is a big year for the sport.”
This came as Wilkin slammed the way the NRL in general disrespects Super League seeing it as secondary.
He said:
“I think the NRL is quite disrespectful of Super League in general, but from the World Club Challenge, you can’t deny the quality of our top tier.”
That said, Wilkin did emphasise that Super League needs to continue to improve: “But the question remains: how do we improve our competition from the bottom up, but St Helens lead the way. They represented our competition really well.”

No surprise or shock with anything Wilkin says! Why if St Helens are so good do they still attract far fewer fans to the totally wicked stadium? A Joke of a Name! Several NRL clubs attract over 20,000 at home games, Super League Clubs don’t! Then at the start of this season, club owners bring in rock bands? That few fans will even know anything about, why? We await with Patience what IMG will do to bring the game of Rugby League to Life! If it fails, it is worrying.
