Jon Wilkin makes huge claim about St Helens

St Helens made history in 2022 when they won a record fourth consecutive Grand Final this time at the expense of Leeds Rhinos.

Add that to their 2021 Challenge Cup Final success and three League Leaders’ Shield wins since 2018 and you have one of the greatest rugby league teams in history.

However, former St Helens player and Sky Sports pundit has made an even bigger claim saying that are one of the greatest sports team the country has produced.

He said: “St Helens are the favourites they have to be. They’re building a dynasty, they’re one of the greatest sports teams that I believe we have seen in this country for some time and built on strong foundations.

“Other teams have recruited well and somebody will surprise us and somebody will disappoint us and that will give us something to talk about. We need things to talk about.”

Wilkin also had his say on Saints’ new coach Paul Wellens, his former teammate:

“I think Paul Wellens has a challenge. He is fully invested in that town and gets a nosebleed when he leaves that town. People say that about everybody in sport, but this genuine.

“His family has been involved in the club and that adds an extra layer of complexity. He has been patient and learnt his craft and visited other sports. He has done everything you need to do as a young coach.

“They have to be the favourites but the big one though is Warrington. We all just want to see how they go.

“There will be some people who surprise us and let’s not forget Leigh. “
