Jon Wilkin makes ‘greased up pig’ claim amid Hull KR standout performers

Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin described Hull KR half-back Mikey Lewis as a ‘greased up pig’ following his man of the match winning performance on Friday night. Simply put, Lewis was spectacular as he drove the Robins to a dominant victory with his work on and off the ball at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The half-back set up Tyrone May’s try in the first half with some smart kicking play before showcasing his deft skill, strength and sheer desire to get over the tryline himself after the break. Kicking to the corner, Lewis saw his own kick pushed back into his hands by Ryan Hall before powering through three defenders to touch down.

It was a try that summed up his evening and it’s fair to say Wilkin got creative when describing the effort on air.

“There’s lots to admire,” he said on Sky Sports. “I think when you deal with Mikey Lewis – it’s obviously a great kick, a very accurate kick and it’s a competition for Ryan Hall, nobody better to be competing.

“This is what impresses me, three defenders, slips one, he’s got three defenders there trying their best. I think the only way I can describe him is slippery, he’s like a greased up pig. He’s hard to stop. He’s impossible to get hold of. He shrugs fantastic defenders off with ease. He enjoys doing it and he’s competitive about bumping off defenders and it showed in that try.”

May was another impressive performer in the Rovers ranks and it was his elusive work in the line before finding an offload that created Peta Hiku’s try late on.

“They can show you the clip of Tyrone May, wandering around and offloading, but if that’s not built on 75 minutes of the most brutal defence ever it can look reckless,” Wilkin added. “It’s in the right area of the field and that unstructured stuff definitely works for them.

“But all hail the Hull KR defence, it was all conquering, mesmerically good at times. I can’t explain the details they got right, it just blew Warrington away.”
