Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin has responded to Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont’s ‘humble pie’ quip after they qualified for the Super League play-offs.
Last week, victory over St Helens meant the side that completed the unlikely feat of making the play-offs, after winning just one of their first seven games of the season.
During the post-game interviews, Beaumont handed Jenna Brooks a pie with the word ‘humble’, saying: “You lot on Sky motivated us from round one when you picked a team that made the play-offs last year to not make the play-offs this year.
“You picked us to drop out and you picked Leeds to make the play-offs so there’s your humble pie.”
However, they made it – by the skin of their teeth – while Leeds Rhinos didn’t.

This week, with Leigh prop Robbie Mulhern on Sky Sports’ The Verdict, Brooks mentioned the incident, saying: “I can’t let you go without mentioning the humble pie.
“But basically to put it into context, post-match interview… before the season Jon Wilkin and Sam Tomkins both picked Leigh to miss the play-offs, so Robbie, after the win, your owner handed me a humble pie.”
Wilkin responded, saying: “It was a humble pie from a not very humble guy.
“Let me say that Derek’s a madman – it’s crazy… he comes in a leopard print jacket with a pie, and to be fair, I trusted but it could have been laced with anything. But we ate it, it was delicious. It was delicious, Jenna Brooks. And I’m happy to be wrong.
“You know, when you asked me to predict things, I said Leigh wouldn’t make it. I think the surprise was Leeds being as pants as they’ve been all year, and Catalans just disintegrated.
“Leigh took advantage of that. But yeah, it was a funny moment from a funny man.”
