Jon Wilkin is “obsessed” with surprising Super League star

A lot has been made of Leeds Rhinos’ inconsistency this season.

It was epitomised last night as the Rhinos followed up their win over the previously unbeaten Catalans Dragons with a disappointing defeat to Hull KR.

As they lost to the Robins, Sky Sports’ Jon Wilkin picked out one Rhinos who he believes sums up their inconsistency who Wilkin said he was obsessed with: Blake Austin.

The former Canberra Raiders and Warrington Wolves stand-off was sensational against Catalans Dragons but has been hot and cold throughout his Leeds career as has halfback partner Aidan Sezer though both are on five Man of Steel points.

Wilkin said of Austin: “When I watch Leeds, I watch Blake Austin. I am obsessed with Blake Austin.

“Watch him against Catalans last week and tell me if that is recognisable to the player we saw against Hull FC.

“Consistency is six months, eight months, ten months of form and that is the challenge for Leeds.”

Wilkin also said of the Rhinos:

“I said fourth, fifth or sixth is a good result for Leeds, even after this start to the season.

“The history of the last 24 months I am telling you that Leeds aren’t in the top four clubs in Super League.

“I would be happy for them to prove me wrong, I think they’re an amazing club and have a rich history with success.

“I look at that club in awe but on the field they’re not where they want to be.”
