Last weekend we saw some huge results in the Betfred Super League with Leeds Rhinos beating Salford Red Devils and Wigan Warriors stunned by Wakefield Trinity which coupled with Castleford Tigers’ defeat to Leigh Leopards saw the Tigers thrust into huge jeopardy.
When they followed Wakefield’s shock win over Leeds – their first of the season – with a shock triumph of their own against Warrington Wolves the relegation battle looked over but Wakefield responded with back to back wins against Salford and Wigan and it is well and truly game on at the bottom of the league as the two West Yorkshire sides battle to keep their heads above water.
This week the Tigers take on in form Hull FC after Wakefield go to Huddersfield Giants.
Speaking last weekend, Andy Last spoke about the situation as things heat up at the bottom of the league:
“We have got ourselves into this position. We are the ones who have got to get ourselves out of it.
“There are nine games to go and we are right in it. We must focus on what we can do well. We must make sure we take care of our own performances.
“If we perform like we know we can and improve our ball control and stiffen up defensively, we know we can beat teams. We have just gone toe to toe with the form side of the competition.
“We are in this position because elements of our performance haven’t been good enough and some individuals haven’t found their best form.
“However, we went into the game with a positive mindset. There was a good vibe and energy around the place. It is my job to get that positivity and vibe back into the place.”
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s fixtures Jon Wilkin had an interesting say: “If Wakefield get a win what does that do to Castleford? One of the most historic and beautiful clubs in our game will get dragged into it which is why you need to watch Super League.”
