Last weekend we got served up some brilliant Super League games as Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR went to golden point, Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves met in a fast paced affair and Leigh Leopards edged the clash against Salford Red Devils after a real nail biter of a game.
But the game of the round was undoubtedly the clash between third place St Helens and table toppers Catalans Dragons in a game described as a “Grand Final dress rehearsal” by the likes of Jon Wells.
It was a brilliant affair between the Super League and World Champions St Helens and the League Leaders Catalans Dragons.
It was a thrilling affair that went right to the death after Lewis Dodd’s try set up a grand stand finish.
In the end though Catalans clung on to a brilliant win.
It was a great game but a difficult one for the officials as you would expect in a fiery affair.
There were some big 50/50 calls and both sides will feel aggrieved by some.
At halftime, Jon Wilkin claimed that Steve McNamara would be “unhappy with the officials” after he felt Saints got “lucky” with some “tough calls” against the Dragons whilst Jenna Brooks revealed that McNamara was “angry” at the break and spoke to the match commissioner.
At the end though it was St Helens unhappy with Bill Arthur claiming Saints fans were booing off the officials at the end.
They likely felt like they should have had a penalty at the end for a strip from Romain Navarrete.
That was certainly the view of Terry O’Connor who said he felt there was “a tug” on the arm from Navarrete.
Had it been given we would have likely seen then game head into Golden Point.
However, McNamara conformed he wasn’t pleased with the officials after the game.
He said on Sky Sports:
“We were on the wrong end of a fair few calls and I don’t know.
“Are you supposed to come here and not get off your line and chase them and put pressure on the opposition and things like that?
“That and having to defend probably more than we should have done based on some of the things that decisions that got made.”
