Jon Wells says Ian Watson decision has no place in modern game

Almost everything that could go wrong for Huddersfield Giants on Friday night did go wrong as the pressure upped on coach Ian Watson.

In an instance that summed up their night, prop Seb Ikahihifo was taken off after just 10 minutes.

Jon Wells of Sky Sports was told it was tactical but he questioned if a 10 minute spell has a place in the game now.

“I am sat in the Huddersfield dugout and it is very very busy comings and goings,” Wells said.

“Seb Ikahihifo came on 23 minutes and gone off after 33 minutes.

“Just a 10 minute spell. I am told it is tactical. What value does that have in the modern game?”

Jon Wilkin argued that it was because Ian Watson was “fuming” with the player:

“I don’t know if it was tactical. He was poor. Low energy and he made a mistake.

“Ian Watson looked to be fuming and has ripped him off.”

Either way, it was a sign of Huddersfield’s struggles to match the Rhinos’ pace as Leeds ran in nine tries for a brilliant win.

Their season has renewed hope but Huddersfield’s looks bleak at present.
