Jon Wells claims Super League club are “sleepwalking” into disaster

Right now teams like Leeds Rhinos, Hull KR and Hull FC are gunning for the play-off places with clubs like Leigh Leopards, St Helens, Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves comfortable inside the top six.

Right now the team in jeopardy seems to be Salford Red Devils. They have suffered a couple of setbacks lately including a thrashing at the hands of bottom club Wakefield Trinity, which came with almost their entire spine out injured, only for that spine to come together and lose to Leeds Rhinos on Sunday in a game they were forced to play with a limited number of backrowers as their injury problem moves from one area of the team to another.

There is even a suggestion that Kallum Watkins’ season could be offer which would be a huge blow to the Red Devils with that win for Leeds trimming the gap between Salford and the Rhinos down to just two points.

Hull FC are not far behind and these two teams feel like the form sides in the competition at the current moment.

However, Salford aren’t the only team in peril.

Warrington Wolves once looked like certainties for the top six, even the top two for that matter when they won eight games in a row to start the season but their results have let them down lately.

They are now in a battle to make the top four. They showed improvement against St Helens last week but their upcoming fixtures don’t get any easier with the likes of Wigan and Leeds on the horizon.

Before that game against St Helens, Jon Wells suggested that Warrington could be “sleepwalking out of the play-offs” which would be a disaster for a side who looked guaranteed to make it earlier this year.

It should be said that the Wolves have had injury problems in recent weeks so much so they tried to bring in 2024 recruit Lachlan Fitzgibbon early.

They have also missed George Williams in recent weeks after he suffered a hamstring injury before their clash with Castleford Tigers which ended in a shock defeat against the 11th placed side.
