John Kear backs shock club to make late surge to Grand Final

Huddersfield Giants have been doing it tough at the start of the season.

They have lost five of their opening games with injuries contributing to their struggles with the Giants missing out in some close games against top teams.

However, the Giants have been backed by John Kear to make a late surge towards the Grand Final like the likes of Leeds Rhinos in the past with Ian Watson well versed in the road to Old Trafford after taking Salford Red Devils there in 2019.

On BBC Five Live, Dave Woods put to Kear:

“I’ve still got a sneaky feeling that Huddersfield might be a classic Salford or Leeds type team that actually makes a run for the Grand Final at the end of the year.”

Kear responded: “I agree with you Dave because Ian Watson certainly knows who he is, what he is and his philosophies as a coach and I think he’s just embedding them into to it.

“I think Kev hit the nail on the head. He doesn’t quite know his best team yet but he will do and I think they’ll finish the season in a very very strong manner as well.

“They’re one to watch coming up on the rails.”

This comes after Kevin Brown described them as “underwhelming.”

“I think it’s been more than slightly disappointing, I think it’s been underwhelming,” Brown said.

“I think the attacking players that they’ve got haven’t performed.

“If you look at that team on paper the individual names stand out. Will Pryce, Jake Connor, Tui Lolohea and you go through and there’s so many good good players but as a team they’re just not playing well together.

“I’m not sure that the balance of that side is working and I’m not sure Ian Watson knows his best combination.”
