John Cartwright provides Hull FC injury updates on Cade Cust and Jed Cartwright

Hull FC coach John Cartwright

John Cartwright was proud of the way his Hull FC side overcame adversity in their win over Wakefield Trinity on Friday night. The Black and Whites claimed their third win of the Super League season to move up to third in the table for a day at the very least, edging out Wakefield 16-12.

Herman Ese’ese got Hull on the scoreboard after Wakefield’s early effort before tries from Ed Chamberlain and Lewis Martin in the second half saw Hull pull away from their hosts and secure another two points.

However, they had to the secure the win on the back of losing stand-off Cade Cust to a hip issue early in the game, before Jed Cartwright left the field with an issue, too. Both players were big misses for the Black and Whites, but the East Yorkshire side rallied, dug deep and did what they had to in order to get the job done at Belle Vue.

“That was a bit of a danger game for us,” Cartwright said after the game. “I think they’re a very good side.

“They’ve been playing really well. They’ve won their last two, and they had a real parochial crowd behind them. A big one for us was coming back down from that high last week. It can be hard sometimes after such an emotional game to get yourself ready and play. It wasn’t clinical, but it was very physical.

“Both sides really ripped into each other, and I was really happy with the fact that they came out 100 miles an hour and we gave up a try, but we were able to repel it and get one of our own back and then ice the game in the back end. That was really pleasing.

“We lost Cade, and then we lost Jed. That was our whole right edge that had to change. Jordan Rapana played at six, and Tom Briscoe changed sides of the field.

“We had a lot of changing of structure, I suppose, and when you lose a key member of your attack, you’ve got to change things on the run. They did. They looked clunky at times, but I’ll put that down to Wakefield’s defence. I thought their defence was rushing in and putting pressure on us.”

Giving updates on the injuries to Cust and Cartwright, the Hull FC head coach added: “Cade has got a hip pointer which is very painful but not long-term. It might not be anything – it’s just dealing with the pain. They’re pretty painful.

“Jed, unfortunately, has tweaked a hammy again. When they made a break at half-time, he chased the hooker, and he felt something pop. We’ll just have to wait and see what the scan says.”
