Salford Red Devils released winger Joe Burgess earlier today citing misconduct allowing Super League rivals Hull KR to swoop in for the Englishman, however Burgess has now had his say on his release.
The announcement by Salford of Burgess’ release came just an hour before Hull KR announced that they had signed the 29-year-old to a one year deal, and now Burgess has spoken out on the matter.
Upon his release Salford released the following statement: “Salford Red Devils can confirm that Joe Burgess has been released with immediate effect following a thorough investigation process.
“As a club, we remain committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and discipline and have an expectation that those who represent the club reflect these values.
“Whilst the decision has not been taken lightly, after consideration it has been decided that the player’s conduct was not consistent with such expectations.
“We wish Joe the very best in his career going forward and thank him for his efforts since arriving at the club in 2021.
“The Club will be making no further comment on this matter.”
It therefore remains unclear what has gone on behind the scenes however Burgess has himself passed comment on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
The winger posted: “I am obviously saddened on the stance taken by the Club. Due to the fact that what has occurred will be the subject of an Appeal, both to the Club, and if necessary the Leagues’ Independent Tribunal, I propose to say very little else at this stage.”
He also added in a follow up: “Just want to say a quick thank you to the lads, staff and the fans for a very enjoyable 3 years.”
What is interesting about Burgess’ statement is that he clearly outlines his intent to appeal the decision, hence why he cannot speak more openly on the matter which would mean this could be an issue we see rumble on further into the season.
For now though he’s a Hull KR player and will look to compete with Niall Evalds and Louis Senior to earn the starting wing spot alongside veteran Ryan Hall.
I am obviously saddened on the stance taken by the Club. Due to the fact that what has occurred will be the subject of an Appeal, both to the Club, and if necessary the Leagues’ Independent Tribunal, I propose to say very little else at this stage.
