New Zealand have missed out on the Rugby League World Cup Final.

The Kiwis came up just short in last night’s semi-final losing 16-14 to Australia at Elland Road.

It was a heart breaking loss as the Kiwis had two tries disallowed and despite a valiant effort weren’t able to defeat Mal Meninga’s side.

It left skipper Jesse Bromwich “devastated”: “I’m not too sure, I don’t think most of the boys will watch that back. A couple of moments we’d have liked back but it’s done now.

“Just devastated yeah.

“Ball control and discipline were the two main things, the effort was there, we defended our try line for so many sets and we gave ourselves a chance to just fall short. You’ve got to be proud of the effort.”

He believes that the Kiwis have bridged the gap to the Kangaroos and that they have shown England and Samoa the way to beat them: “I think so, I think we’ve bridged the gap, tonight we were really close and we could have won again.

“What we did in the first half is a good game plan for whoever plays them next week.”

That said, coach Michael Maguire, formerly of the Wigan Warriors, believes that the fact that England and Samoa haven’t experienced a real grind could disadavtange them: “England and Samoa haven’t really been in a grind but that may happen tomorrow which may help them.”
