Sydney Roosters chairman Nick Politis wants to see Jared Waerea-Hargreaves return to the club following his spell with Hull KR. The forward will be calling time on his NRL career this year after taking up the opportunity to end his playing days in Super League.
Waerea-Hargreaves, who will be looking to reach the NRL Grand Final next week when the Roosters face Melbourne Storm in a preliminary final, has penned a one-year deal with the Robins and will make the move to east Hull in pre-season. The 35-year-old represents one of the most high profile pieces of Super League business going into the 2025 season and he’ll certainly be keen to make the most of his spell in the Northern Hemisphere.
However, it seems the prop is destined to return to the Roosters when his playing days are over, with Politis expressing his desire to add Waerea-Hargreaves to the club’s academy coaching ranks.
“We want him to come back to the club after he spends the year overseas,” the Roosters chief said, per the Daily Telegraph. “Hopefully he wants to come back here with the club in some capacity.
“We’re looking at getting him involved in the academy. He speaks well and he’s an intelligent guy. He carries himself well.”
Politis added: “He’s a family man off the field.
“A lot of people see what he’s like on the field and think he’s an aggressive, dirty player but he’s not, he just plays hard and tough. He’s a wonderful person.”
Waerea-Hargreaves has spent most of his career with the Roosters, joining the club in 2010 after a brief stint with Manly Sea Eagles and making 309 appearances. That puts him on top of the Roosters’ all-time appearance maker list, and he’ll be looking to ensure he bids farewell to the club on a high, with NRL gold still a possibility.
He will be linking up with Willie Peters’ side next season, though, with the forward being one of a raft of signings, alongside Rhyse Martin, Tom Davies, Micky McIlorum, Bill Leyland and Eribe Doro.
