Jamie Jones-Buchanan says this from Super League rivals “killed” him to see

Jamie Jones-Buchanan was once a part of one of Super League’s most successful sides.

In his time at Leeds Rhinos, they won eight Grand Finals though he missed the 2015 win during their treble winning season.

Amongst this spell, the Rhinos won three in a row, a record topped by St Helens last season with the Saints defeating the Rhinos at Old Trafford in 2022.

Though Buchanan’s team were beaten, he has massive admiration for St Helens.

He told Sky Sports: “What I admire about St Helens is that they’ve been at the top for a long time but they’ve been really consistent in that as well.”

That said, he did acknowledge that it “killed” him to see them do it:

“They beat the Leeds record of three by getting four in a row last season, which killed me if I’m honest with you as a Yorkshireman and a Leeds lad.”

Ultimately though, he acknowledges their ability: “You’ve got to admire their ability, their fortitude, their resilience and the intensity they play at. When you’re at the top of any tree in sport everybody comes to knock you off every week but St Helens have repelled that over four years.”

This came as he said James Roby was the most consistent player in the Super League era:

“In a gladiatorial game like rugby league that takes its toll physically and mentally, take James Roby for example I don’t think there’s been a greater player in that consistency and fortitude within the Super League era.”
