Former St Helens, Canterbury Bulldogs and St George Illawarra forward James Graham has slammed the winning penalty in Sydney Roosters’ controversial victory over Brisbane Broncos at the weekend.

Adam Keighran slotted home a penalty as the clock wound down, but the manner in which the infringement was given has rankled a significant amount of viewers.

Thomas Flegler was adjudged to have hit Sydney’s Sitili Tupouniua with a high shot. Granted, it was a slap to the face, but there was minimal contact and in the heat of the moment probably should not have been punished.

However, the Roosters benefitted and Keighran stepped up.

But, former NRL and Super League star James Graham could not have been more upset with the decision, even asking at one point “who are we trying to appeal to there?”

It’s a good point because, throughout the 2021 season, a number of decisions have been put under intense scrutiny that, in recent years, have never been an issue.
