James Bentley on his ‘special’ time at St Helens as he explains why he joined Leeds Rhinos

Talking to James Bentley you can see exactly why he is sometimes being touted as one of the most impressive back-rowers in the Super League competition.

Humble, passionate and excitable, Bentley beamed when talking about his beloved Leeds Rhinos – the team he grew up supporting as a child.

And, now the 24-year-old gets to don that jersey – something which he cannot wait to do.

“I’m from Leeds and obviously to come and play for the team I grew up supporting was important,” Bentley said.

“And then that meant that I was closer to my family back home which drew me towards Leeds as well – it’s a pretty special opportunity to play for my boyhood club.”

Though his time at St Helens ended with Bentley being out injured, he still has very fond memories of his time there.

“I loved it there, obviously got great memories but it didn’t end the best for me with the injuries so I didn’t end on my terms and the way I would have liked it to.

“But, I’ve got great memories with the lads and it was a special time in my career.”

Bentley is now fully over those injuries and staying clear and healthy is one of his main goals in 2022.

“Everything is good and I’m feeling really good – my body is in good nick and I can’t get wait to get out there.

“Every time I play I want to win – that’s the standard for me.

“Last year I had a few injuries and I want to stay injury free and keep in that team week in week out.”
