James Bentley endures nightmare debut for Leeds Rhinos with red card

James Bentley has been sent off for Leeds Rhinos on his debut for a high tackle.

The Leeds forward caught Warrington Wolves halfback Gareth Widdop around the head in the first-half of the opening fixture of both sides’ 2022 Super League season.

Humble, passionate and excitable, Bentley had previously beamed when talking about his beloved Leeds Rhinos – the team he grew up supporting as a child.

“I’m from Leeds and obviously to come and play for the team I grew up supporting was important,” Bentley said.

“And then that meant that I was closer to my family back home which drew me towards Leeds as well – it’s a pretty special opportunity to play for my boyhood club.”

Though his time at St Helens ended with Bentley being out injured, he still has very fond memories of his time there.

“I loved it there, obviously got great memories but it didn’t end the best for me with the injuries so I didn’t end on my terms and the way I would have liked it to.

“But, I’ve got great memories with the lads and it was a special time in my career.”

However, his first game could hardly have gone any worse.
