It has been reported that it’s “most likely” that Jackson Hastings will return to Super League next season.
That’s according to The Daily Telegraph, who say he’ll be one of the players released due to his side, the Newcastle Knights, having major salary cap issues.
Any Super League return would see him return to the competition where he won Man of Steel and in which he made two Grand Finals in his time with Salford Red Devils and Wigan Warriors.
He would surely slot straight into most Super League starting 13s, but the main problem is that his contract currently sees him earn around £400,000 per year – far higher than even the marquee player cap in Super League.
The Knights are reportedly happy to contribute to any salary for next year, as they’re just desperate to get some of the current money they’re paying him off their books.
With all this in mind, here are some sides he could sign for.
Three Super League clubs that could sign Jackson Hastings
Leeds Rhinos
There were suggestions from multiple sources earlier this year that Hastings could be set to link up with Brad Arthur’s Leeds Rhinos for 2025, but these reports were rubbished by a number of other leading journalists.
Still, the Rhinos could be up for a half-back to provide genuine competition for Matt Frawley and Brodie Croft, neither of whom have reached their potential in performances this season.
The move would also see Hastings back with Ian Blease, who were both at Salford Red Devils when he won the Man of Steel award.
Warrington Wolves
The Wolves are probably the side that this move makes the most sense for.
With Josh Drinkwater leaving, Oli Leyland not yet at his potential and Leon Hayes currently recovering from an ACL injury, a half-back will certainly be on Sam Burgess’ wish list for 2025.
The club have got plenty of ambition – with a game in Las Vegas on the horizon, and with the Knights contributing to any Hastings contract, this could certainly be a move of particular interest to Wire.
He would also, eventually, have plenty of competition, forcing him to fight for any starting role in the halves.
Catalans Dragons
With both Jayden Nikorima and Jordan Abdull away from the club in 2025, a half-back to join Luke Keary might be of interest to Catalans.
They have already made a number of huge signings from Down Under, for both 2024 and 2025, and this could be the next one if they have the money left.
After a poor 2024 campaign didn’t live up to the spectacular expectations after reaching the 2023 Grand Final, they will be desperate to do whatever they can to get the side back in the upper echelons of Super League – and at the very least, to return to the play-offs.
