A crucial decision in the game between Warrington Wolves and Hull KR has been questioned with Sky Sports host Brian Carney labelling it incorrect.
There’s plenty on the line with the victor of the game at the Halliwell Jones Stadium possibly set to go to the top of Super League, however, the use of the video referee has been questioned.
Warrington Wolves were the only team that Willie Peters had not beaten as Hull KR coach heading into the game and his side were bang up for it as they blitzed the home side early.
Jesse Sue scored after just six minutes and a second try came quickly as Tyrone May lept highest to claim Mikey Lewis’ teasing kick.
It was a Mikey Lewis kick that then set up the contentious try that has been ruled out with the Hull KR half kicking in behind Josh Thewlis for Ryan Hall to chase onto.
Super League’s all-time leading scorer was adjudged to have touched the ball with his fingertips by video referee Liam Moore but later replays seemed to show that Hall did not, meaning that Oliver Gildart’s subsequent try was incorrectly ruled out.
Were Hull KR let down by the video referee?
Presenting for Sky Sports, Brian Carney certainly felt that Hull KR were let down by video referee Liam Moore as he assessed the decision at half-time.
Assessing the ‘No Try’ call, Carney argued that Hull KR should have been more than 10-0 up suggesting that Ryan Hall did not knock on.
St Helens and England captain Jodie Cunningham argued: “At the start of this, I was thinking no try all day. But when you watch it slowed down, I don’t think Ryan Hall actually gets any fingertips to that.
“I think Hull KR will feel hard done to here. It looks like it touched Ryan Hall’s fingertips but it actually just touches Thewlis’ elbow.”
To that, Carney put it to Jon Wilkin: “That’s a try?”, with the former St Helens captain sitting on the fence about the call.
Hull KR headed into half-time atop Super League on points difference with a 10-point win all they needed to go top of the table, whilst any win would do for Warrington Wolves to summit the competition.
Warrington have since pulled a try back after half-time meaning the game hangs in the balance at 10-4 to the Robins.
