‘It’s a prestigious job’ – Hull KR boss Willie Peters confirms interest in vacant England job

Hull KR

Hull KR boss Willie Peters admits he would be keen to have a conversation with the powers that be regarding the vacant England head coach position.

Peters was part of the Australia set up that took England down 3-0 in the Ashes series last autumn and since Shaun Wane stepped down from the role earlier this month, the Robins man has been considered to be one of the front runners.

The recruitment process is thought to be in its infancy with the role expected to be part time at the very least, allowing the successful candidate to continue work elsewhere during the season.

The likes of St Helens boss Paul Rowley, Warrington Wolves’ Sam Burgess and Wigan Warriors’ Matt Peet have all been mentioned as potential candidates for the role, while Brad Arthur threw his hat in the ring this weekend by suggesting that he could be keen on the position.

Peters shares Arthur’s sentiment, it seems, with the 46-year-old admitting on Sunday that he would be open to a chat with the RFL about the role.

“I’ll certainly have a conversation that is for sure,” Peters said on Sunday after watching his young Hull KR side beaten 34-6 by Wakefield Trinity at Craven Park in a pre-season friendly. “I’d be interested in having a conversation and seeing where it goes from there.

“When the process starts I suppose I want to listen first and find out a little bit more, but the appealing part, of course it is a prestigious job isn’t it, to be head coach of England. For any coach, whether you’re a young coach or an experienced coach it is an opportunity I’m sure most people would want and I am no different.

“This is my fourth year over here now, I’ve played over here and I know the game over here really well. It’s an opportunity that if it arose I’d certainly love to have a conversation in and around it. We’ll see how it goes from there.

“I’m just being honest and answer the question of would I interested, I’m interested in having a conversation that’s for sure.”
