Italy captain Nathan Brown blames pitch for niggling injury as he talks about quarter-final hopes

Italy have once again picked up a group game victory emulating their efforts in 2013 and 2017, but now can they go one better in 2022 and make a first ever World Cup quarter-final?

They’ve given themselves a good platform to do so with a highlights filled 28-4 win over Scotland.

After the game Parramatta star and former State of Origin player Nathan Brown, Italy captain, picked up the Man of the Match despite the hat-trick scored by Jake Maizen.

After the game he spoke about the attitude of his Italian side and proving the doubters wrong: “We knew that pretty much everyone wrote us off for this whole tournament and that’s what us Italians are all about: passion, hard work and fighting to the death.

“All we were talking about through the week was fighting for the full 80 minutes. It’s a real honour to be captain of Italy.”

When asked about potentially making the quarter-finals, he told BBC: “We just got to take it game by game. It’s one off the list. We’re in a tough pool. All we know is to keep fighting.”

Brown picked up a bit of a niggle at the end of the game and he revealed he was struggling on the 3G surface at Kingston Park in Newcastle: “I’m all good, I’m all good. Just not used to playing on this kind of surface. First time playing here, it’s all good.”
