“It was a bit too…” – Sam Burgess reacts to Warrington Wolves’ Challenge Cup heartbreak

Sam Burgess has reacted after his Warrington Wolves side were beaten 18-8 in the Challenge Cup Final by Wigan Warriors.

It was a tough loss for the Wolves, who despite starting well were taught a lesson by Wigan as their experience showed on the big stage.

For Burgess and Warrington, it was reminder of the benchmark they need to reach if they are to win trophies, something the Wire boss recognised after the game.

“They are the world champions and a great side,” said Burgess .”They’ve been together a while, they defend for each other so they’re a very good side and they’re very hard to beat.

“I think everyone understands that. They’re a champions side and you got to give them credit, they were brilliant today.”

Warrington Wolves still on a journey, says Burgess

Despite Warrington coming in as underdogs, it was still a tough loss for the Wire faithful.

Despite this, Burgess took the positives from the day and the performance of his inexperienced side.

“I mean, I’m disappointed for the players. You know, they put a lot of effort in getting here, so we just didn’t get our game on tonight,” Burgess added.

“By the time we got into it, it was a bit too late.

“It’s not a setback whatsoever, it’s a step forward for us, you know.

“I had 12 players today that never played in the final so next time we get there, I’ve got 12 players that have already played and some experience and felt that emotion and the pressure.

“So we’re only going to be better for it. I mean today was a win-win for us.

“We’ve got a young team we’re on our own journey.”

Today was a win-win? No. Today was a lose-lose. We produced possibly our worst performance to date when it mattered the most, off the back of a tremendous performance from the kids. This might prove to be a bit of a stumbling block.
