It has become apparent that The Sun newspaper is boycotting rugby league.
Rumours on Twitter suggest that a dispute broke out because The Sun were unable to send reporters to this year’s Magic Weekend because of their ban from Liverpool FC.
Since then no rugby league has appeared in the paper or online, with both attracting millions of daily readers from the UK and abroad.
In February 2017, Sun journalists were banned from on-site reporting of matches and direct participation in press conferences at Anfield because of their coverage of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.
Because of this, it is believed that The Sun were unable to cover Magic Weekend and now the paper has taken a stance against covering rugby league.
Hugely respected journalist Gary Carter is The Sun’s rugby league reporter with his quality content and exclusives attracting huge readership throughout the year.
The absence of his coverage has not gone unnoticed with Carter’s peers and rugby league fans calling for the dispute to be resolved and the boycott to end.
No rumours. There hasn’t been a rugby league story in the paper since the day before Magic Weekend. A real concern
