Last night New Zealand maintained their 100% record in the World Cup with a 48-10 win over Ireland at Headingley stadium last night.

Despite a strong start from the Irish, they found themselves 16-2 behind when Jahrome Hughes began to pull the strings.

A Louis Senior intercept gave Ireland hope till Peta Hiku scored a second.

Ireland thought they had a route back into the game when Jared Waerea-Hargreaves was penalised for a high tackle, the kind of which we’ve seen yield red cards in Super League this year.

Many expected a red to follow as consequence but only a yellow was shown. Then in his absence, an Ireland error led to a fifth New Zealand try.

As he came onto the field, the Kiwis began to really pull away.

After the game Ireland boss Ged Corcoran wasn’t pleased with the decision describing it as “a game changer.”

He said: “I’m filthy with it. I’ve got to be careful with what I say now but that’s a game changer.

“I’ll have to hold back the emotions on that. A bit of a dog shot, that is a game changer for me.

“They boys lost two of their teammates due to a decision and I’d love to see them go to town on that this week.”

He thinks that it could be the end of Waerea-Hargreaves tournament: “If it’s the correct charge it’ll be interesting to see if he plays again in this tournament.”
