Injury update on Leigh Leopards star as Adrian Lam makes squad admission

Leigh Leopards will travel to face Wigan Warriors on Tuesday night to contest their rearranged Super League Round Two clash and Adrian Lam has now offered a fitness update on his squad.

The game was initially postponed so that hosts Wigan could contest the World Club Challenge against Penrith Panthers with this Leigh game moved to the next available date.

However, because Wigan progressed all the way to the Challenge Cup Final, no available weekend was to be had meaning Super League was forced to reschedule the game as a midweek clash.

As such, both teams played on Thursday and will play this coming weekend meaning they’ll each take on three games in 10 and 11 days respectively.

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has claimed that it has left his squad looking “lethargic” as he outlined how the club have approached the game.

“It’s a difficult one, but you hardly get to train so you’ve just got to rely really on what you’ve done over the last couple of weeks. So in that sense, I think we’ve prepared the best we possibly can,” he explained when speaking to the media.

Is Matt Moylan fit for Leigh Leopards?

We already know that several stars will be missing the game with Wigan Warriors’ Bevan French out and Leigh Leopards’ prop Tom Amone stood down by the club over HIA concerns.

However, the status of Matt Moylan and whether the Australian would be fit was one of the key questions. Leigh Leopards named him in their 21-man squad, recalling him for action but Adrian Lam has confirmed that he is still a 50/50 gameday decision.

“That (Moylan being 50/50) is still the case. We’ll make that decision just before kick-off.

“Obviously, there is still no Tom Amone and no Gaz O’Brien so there’s a few key players out but it makes it all that more interesting for the fans.”

If Moylan is able to return then he could slot in at full-back in place of Gaz O’Brien with Zak Hardaker and Bailey Hodgson both possible options instead, whereas Brad Dwyer could continue in the halves alongside Lachlan Lam.

Lam had earlier confirmed that there were “one or two players” who were to be decided on which could suggest another injury, however, he asserted the fact both clubs are in the same position.

“We’ve got to make a decision on one or two players by close of business today because we play tomorrow and then we’ve got to get on the bus and get up the road there and have a really good crack at this game.

“We trained today and the boys looked a little bit lethargic, but I’m sure that will happen on both sides. They’ve only had three or four days off and they’re into training and into a game tomorrow. So it’s a difficult thing to do and to play. But it’s where we’re at. Both clubs are in the same situation. So it’ll be an even contest.”

With Catalans Dragons losing to London Broncos on Sunday, it’s given Leigh Leopards some hope of making the top six with the gap just at five points now. Adrian Lam has now labelled the game against Wigan as one that his team must win to keep their season ‘alive’.

“It’s important for us to get a really solid performance in. We need to win to keep our season alive and make that six.”
