Injured Leeds Rhinos man “nearly there” as he explains side effects of injury

Leeds Rhinos youngster Alfie Edgell has declared that he is “nearly there” in terms of a return with the full-back outlining the side effects of the injury he sustained just before Christmas.

Having been named in Brad Arthur’s squad to take on Wakefield Trinity on Boxing Day, Edgell suffered a broken jaw after a collision in training meaning that the full-back was ruled out for that West Yorkshire derby and most of the pre-season.

The 20-year-old has now spoken on the Leeds Rhinos YouTube channel to discuss the injury, his rehab and just how close he is to returning to the field, having missed the recent friendly against Wigan Warriors.

“I’ve just done my first session with the team and felt good,” Edgell revealed.

“It’s good, it seems like it has gone really fast actually and I thought it was going to be the opposite.”

Having debuted in 2023, Edgell was thrown in a lot more in 2024 as he made 16 appearances with the standout being his four-try haul against Hull FC.

Able to play at full-back and on the wing, it was expected that Edgell would play a far greater role in 2025 and that was set to begin with a strong pre-season but the injury means he has missed both trial games.

Whilst accepting that there was disappointment at missing the Boxing Day clash, Edgell was reflective on the fact much of the hard work had been done by that point – he simply could not showcase the results.

He said: “It was tough, I was looking forward to getting out there on Boxing Day and putting into action what we have been doing all pre-season and I feel like it’s been the toughest pre-season I’ve done.

“That’s where all the improvement is so I was looking forward to showcasing that on Boxing Day but you can’t do a lot about it.”

Given the fact that it is a fractured jaw, there have been adverse effects for the youngster, namely because of what he can and can’t eat whilst the jaw was healing.

“I had mash and gravy for Christmas dinner and then I’ve been building up to solids in the last couple of days,” he revealed.

“I’ve been on protein shakes for the last five weeks pretty much so I’m feeling pretty lean, I need to put a bit of weight back on but I’ve been training really hard running-wise so I’ve got plenty in my legs and feel good overall.”

With the season just over a fortnight away, Edgell confirmed that he is ‘just a couple of weeks away’ from a return.

He said: “Hopefully, I’m just going to get it re-scanned to make sure that it has healed alright and I should be sweet from there so I’m nearly there now.”
