“In sports you dream big and never think the biggest dreams will come true” – John Bateman reacts to captaining England

John Bateman’s career has reached numerous heights, but yesterday it peaked when he was handed the biggest honour in English rugby league.

A multi-time Super League Champion with Wigan Warriors, John Bateman has won more silverware than most players can dream of and even went on to steal the show in Australia as he well and truly made it in the NRL with the Canberra Raiders helping them go all the way to the Grand Final in 2019 after being named the Dally M Second-row of the year having proven his status as a world class forward.

But all of that was exceeded yesterday by the honour of leading his country out as captain of England. He crowned the day with a brace of tries and an impeccable performance in the backrow as he led his side to a 30-10 win over the French.

After an emotional day, he took to social media to express what it felt like to live his dream. He said: “In sports you dream big and never think the biggest dreams will come true.

“I dreamed of only ever playing for my country, I did that this weekend as well as captaining my country and wow what an honour that was.

“I’d just like to say a massive thank you to my family and friends, the ones who’ve been there from day one, my Mum, Nan, brother and Grandads who’ve drove me all over the country as a young nipper. That one was for you.

“And to finish, the team for going out there and getting the win.”

He finished the statement with a lovely touch: “Dream as big as you want kids because a little tear away from Bradford has lived his biggest dream ever this weekend. Thank you.”
