It was a good derby win for Wigan Warriors tonight against Leigh Leopards in the Battle of the Borough last night as the Warriors prepare for another derby against St Helens.
Speaking after the game on Sky Sports Wigan boss Matt Peet was pleased with the performance and said it was a tribute to their statistician:
“We were closer to our best, a positive step and we were better with the ball.
“I was particularly impressed with our defence we looked very organised.
“I want to mention Mark Clarke our statistician. He is in hospital and doing it tough and the lads were determined to put in a good performance tonight for him and I think they did. If you;re watching, that was for you mate.”
In terms of improving their performance, Peet said:
“We are decent team and we work hard and we are on a journey together.
“We were committed tonight and we were accurate with the ball which is something we haven’t done so far this season.
“We are enjoying our work.”
He also gave his verdict on Man of the Match Bevan French at fullback:
“Very fun, I like him, he is a free spirit and we encourage him to be so. We just want him to bring his strengths. The game was in the balance and our star players produced big players and we were able to stop theirs.”
French and partner in crime Jai Field caused havoc tonight but Field limped off after chasing a kick.
Peet confirmed that it is very unlikely he will play against St Helens after a hamstring problem:
“I’m 99% sure he won’t be playing. We wouldn’t risk him even if it wasn’t that bad. We have options, these squads are put together for the season and I look forward to trying to work that out and not just against St Helens.”
Asked if French could move to the halves to replace him with Cade Cust injured, Peet said:
“I will leave him where he is if he keeps doing what he did so we might have to find a replacement in the halves.”
Speaking after this in his press conference, Peet confirmed that Field would need a scan:
“Jai Field is going to need a scan. Pulled hamstring, we’ll be patient with him whatever he needs.”
He also confirmed that Liam Marshall missed the game through injury.
