Important update on Sione Mata’utia after horror clash

There were some worrying scenes at Wigan’s DW Stadium.

Sione Mata’utia is being stretchered off. It is not a surprise with the second rower flat out as he hit the floor as he looked to come up with a huge hit after a Jack Welsby error put pressure on the Saints.

It is a sad scene but credit to fans on both sides for applauding him off the field.

Everyone at Serious About Rugby League are thinking of him at this time.

The same is true of Wigan Warriors coach Matt Peet as he paid tribute to Mata’utia after the game saying he felt he should have been taken off earlier.

“I hope Sione Mata’utia is okay, it looked a nasty injury. He is obviously a tough player.

“I thought he should have been taken off in the first half, but I hope he is okay.”

Had that decision been made, Mata’utia wouldn’t have been forced off.

However, those who were worried about the second-rower can rest a bit easier tonight.

Mata’utia took to Instagram to say: “All good fam. Well done to the Wigan lads. It was a tough game. I f**king love play in the derby.

“The boys will bounce back.”

Mata’utia will at least miss next week’s game against Hull KR who defeated their rivals Hull FC on Friday.
