“I’m not making excuses” – Powell explains defeat to St Helens

After eight wins in a row to start the season, Warrington Wolves have lost the last two games against 2022’s top two.

Tonight they were beaten by Super League and World Champions St Helens.

After the game Daryl Powell addressed what went wrong:

“Well obviously it is disappointing, I think we gave the ascendency to St Helens and they were too willing to take it.

“Obviously we gave them an intercept at the start of the game and we never had control in the first half until right at the end where if we had a little more clarity we would have probably posted points but second half was really disappointing.

“I think we lost our way, that try just after halftime I think really hurt us.

“I think we were trying to over play a bit and they deserved to win.

“We need to get some troops back but we need to play better than that. That was disappointing.”

Powell there hinted at some key absentees and he noted that again as he said:

“We lost some troops in the middle. I’m not making excuses, because St Helens were depleted as well tonight. But we have built a lot of positives with how we started the season but we have seen some areas where we need to improve and getting some troops back will help.”

However, he has said his side need to do better under pressure:

“That we need to do better in pressure games. I thought last week we were poor under pressure and we were again today.

“We need to find a better way of dealing with that and being under pressure and handling the better teams.

“There is some work for us to do.

“We started poorly for the second week in a row. We need to improve and we will start that from tomorrow.”
