‘If he was English he would be in Super League’ – York boss James Ford claims Featherstone Rovers star is ‘playing in the wrong division’

Featherstone Rovers overcame York City Knights in an energetic and stellar performance to register their first win of the Championship season.

A 30-12 victory looks close on paper, but on grass it was a different story as Rovers looked like they could score from anywhere with York under the pump for most of the game.

And, when Featherstone head coach Brian McDermott introduced hooker Connor Jones to proceedings in the second-half, Rovers seemed to kick up a gear.

It is this player who York boss James Ford hailed as being too good for the Championship.

“He’s (Jones) playing in the wrong division,” Ford told Premier Sports following the game.

“I think if he was English he would be in Super League.”

Before the game, Ford had spoken about how the pressure was on Featherstone due to the calibre of signings that they had made – but Rovers exerted their authority for the majority of the game.

“The pressure is on Featherstone everywhere, you can’t recruit Brian McDermott and sign players like that and not be shot at.”

For the Knights, the end result was nothing to be sniffed at and York look like a play-off team in waiting.
