George Williams admits he doesn’t know whether he will be a Warrington Wolves player next season amid transfer interest from the NRL. Williams’ future at the Halliwell Jones Stadium has been pulled into doubt this week, with the skipper receiving attention from NRL club Dolphins.
The half-back is contracted at Warrington until the end of next season, but there has been suggestions that he could be set to leave at the end of the current campaign to return to Australia. A transfer fee of $400,000 has been touted by reports Down Under and it has been said that Warrington have accepted that they will lose their star man and captain at the end of the season.
Nothing has been finalised just yet, but the Warrington skipper lifted the lid on the situation following his side’s 24-10 win over Hull FC on Saturday.
“I’ve spoken to the club, there’s been a lot of talk in the week and there’s nothing major to it, there’s a little bit of interest,” Williams told Sky Sports openly. “I’d be stupid not to listen to it at my age, I’m 30, it’s now or never.
“Is it an itch I want to scratch? Warrington have been brilliant, I’ve been respectful and told them my honest thoughts and what will be, will be. There’s a lot of logistics to sort out but at the minute I’m open minded.”
Asked if Williams would be at Warrington next season, Williams replied: “I’m not too sure.
“I’m committed to the team, I love the team and I’m the captain of the club and no one will be able to doubt my commitment but as I say, there’s a lot of logistics still to go.”
Asked whether he would be with Warrington until the end of this season, he added: “100 per cent.”
George Williams on Warrington Wolves’ top six chances
The result over Hull FC was much-needed one with Warrington picking up their first win in four in all competitions. And, it now means they sit just three points off the play-off picture as the second half of the Super League season takes shape.
“Our goals at the start of the season have probably lessened now, we’ve not had a great run of games so the goal for us is top six,” he added. “We have 10 or 11 games left and we have to win the majority of them. Everything else is out of our control, we just have to win our games.”
