Jay Pitts might be in the twilight of his career, but he’s keen to stick around at Wakefield Trinity for at least another year. The 35-year-old has been one of the stars of Wakefield’s season so far, with Pitts still very much at the top of his game as a loose-forward.
He’s made six appearances so far this year, with key roles played in wins over Leeds Rhinos and Leigh Leopards, this evening’s Challenge Cup quarter-final opponents, on the road. It’s clear then that despite his age, Pitts isn’t slowing down and that puts more focus on his future with Wakefield.
The forward is one of 11 players in the final year of their deals at Belle Vue and Pitts has made it clear that he feels as though he could go around at least one more time.
“I feel fine, I’m recovering alright and I’m enjoying my rugby so I’ll play as long as I can,” Pitts told the press this week in the build-up to tonight’s last eight showdown.
“The biggest thing for me is I want to play and I want to contribute, I don’t want to be hanging about and just being a spare part in the team. I pride myself on doing my work and doing my work to the best of my ability to help the team. As long as I’m doing that then I’ll keep playing.”
Pushed on his contract situation, Pitts added: “I’m up to the end of this year and then we’ll see what happens
“It’s if club are happy with me as well, that’s the biggest thing. If the club are happy with me and we’re happy, then I’d happily stay on. It’s a conversation for down the line but I would definitely say I’d still be interested.”
Wakefield Trinity will be looking to seal a spot in the semi-finals of the Cup for the first time since 2016 this evening.
