Ian Watson says St Helens try should have been looked at more by the video referee

Last night it was two tries a piece as Huddersfield Giants came up just short against St Helens on Sky Sports.

It was another example of how the Giants look primed to compete with the top clubs in 2023 but are just a little but behind them.

It is certainly not by much given that this game could have gone either way with some crucial moments going against the Giants which could have balanced the game in their favour.

After all they were the better side in the first 25 minutes but found themselves 12-0 down until just before the break Ash Golding gave them some hope with a try.

This came after Tommy Makinson had scored Saints’ second. It was a score Ian Watson felt should have been looked at more by the video referee akin to the inspection when Innes Senior scored to make it 14-12 in the second half despite a desperate cover tackle by Jack Welsby.

“I’d have been quite happy to have a few looks at that, the amount of looks they had at Innes’ try compared to that one.”

Watson also picked out another key moment in the first half:

“We were on the front foot and I thought the momentum was with us. There was an interesting call should we say, where there was four of their players offside and Nathan Peats runs into them on tackle four yet he doesn’t call a six again but tackle five and we have to kick on the back end of it.

“That set, they come out and have a tackle where Chris McQueen has his arm caught in the tackle. He gives a six again and then they score.

“Just a small little momentum change like that in a game like this massive, look at the score now.

“We don’t concede them six points, and then we compounded it by making an error and kicking out on the full which makes them come and score, I think it was last tackle in the corner with Makinson.”

Dont want to mention clarke calling a team cheats on live TV. Sky need new blood, awful commentary team
