Ian Watson on how far behind Wigan Warriors Huddersfield currently are

In 2022 Huddersfield Giants competed at the very top of Super League finishing third and making the Challenge Cup Final.

Now their next step is becoming a consistent competitor at the top like Wigan Warriors who the Giants take on tomorrow night.

But how far away from Wigan’s impressive standards are the Giants?

Ian Watson stated when speaking to the press: “I think we’re building to get there to be there all the time. It does take a while to get a team to be up there and competing year in and year out.

“The players have to understand that everything is different. The way you play, the way you train, the way you look after yourself off the field. The best players do them things for a reason which is why they end up at the top of the table.

“We always talk about at Huddersfield that we have changed the level of expectation because of the season we had last year but the culture side needs little bits of tweaking in to make sure we are that top team.

“That’s why we brought in people like Kevin Naiqama in and why Chris McQueen is outstanding, Nathan Peats, Jake Bibby they know what it is like to be in those environments and be a top top player.

“The guys who came in last year did that the likes of Chris Hill and people like them.

“It is them guys that let people know what level they need to be at. It takes a while.

“Everyone was saying at the start of the season that we have a good squad but that squad has to be united not just on game day but on the training field and off field as well.”
