“In a pretty bad way”: Ian Watson reveals bug in Huddersfield Giants camp

Huddersfield Giants Ian Watson

Huddersfield Giants boss Ian Watson has confirmed that there has been a “bug” within the side recently, causing players to miss out through illness.

The Giants lost yet again yesterday, with the loss to Warrington making it eight losses out of their last nine games.

Before the game, he said on Sky Sports: “We’ve had a bit of a bug going through the camps since we came back from Catalans.

“We thought we were kind of getting through it, but then it has hit a load of other lads as well so unfortunately, we’ve had to scramble a few things around but it makes it exciting.”

He re-iterated this following thr game, suggesting that it may have contributed to the devastating nature of the defeat – 48-0.

He said: “The one thing I will say is there has been a lot of people who’s been real ill this week and there’s some guys who played there today who have struggled badly as well and kind of they put their hand up.

“If we’re going to the illness thing and I’m making excuses there but if we’re going to the illness, then there are guys who’ve lost five kilograms over there. There are guys who’ve been in hospital and A&E. That’s how badly it’s kind of hit us.”

However, some weren’t buying it: none more so than pundit Jon Wilkin, who was brutal in his analysis of the game.

He scathed: “All of the aspects of the game that you’d hope to compete in, Warrington dominated. They dominated Huddersfield.

Granted, Huddersfield came back with an illness from France and blah-de-blah-de-blah and all that, I just don’t buy it. Warrington were by far the better team in every single aspect.”

However, Watson kept mentioning the bug via BBC West Yorkshire, saying: “There are players who have been in hospital this week, there’s players who have lost 5-6kg this week. I don’t know what this bug is that we got, but we had it pretty bad.

“We’ve still got one player at the moment who’s at home who was in hospital. We’ll see where he gets to, but apparently he’s in a pretty bad way with his weight and stuff. We’ll see.”

This is a real worry for the side, who are really struggling for form, but also for the players involved on a personal level.
