It’s a bold statement, but it’s coming from a coach who is arguably in the form of his career so far.
After making the move to the Huddersfield Giants ahead of the 2021 Super League season, Ian Watson struggled in his first year.
That being said, any potential struggle has been wiped away throughout 2022 as the Giants sit in the top in the Super League table and boast a Challenge Cup Final appearance.
And, ahead of Huddersfield’s clash with top of the table St Helens this weekend, Watson himself believes that they are the two best teams in terms of a number of areas and wants to see a Grand Final between the two clubs.
“We are probably the two best teams in terms of territory, possession and the way we turn the ball over,” Watson said.
“It would be nice if it materialises that way (a Grand Final between Huddersfield and Saints), but there are going to be a few other teams that have a say in that but we have to believe in ourselves that we can beat St Helens.
“We probably gained a lot of confidence from the last meeting and we have spoke about using the games as a play-off mentality.
“It’s an interesting game, we’ve spoken about how the opportunity to go second.”
With Josh Jones and Will Pryce both set to play this week, Watson considered delving into the loan market, but revealed that he will be recalling players back instead as the transfer deadline looms on 22nd July.
“We will want to be recalling some youth who were sent out to get some game time in case the injury crisis does come.
“We’ve got some good young lads getting some valuable game time out there.
“One of our young lads was going to go to a high end Championship team and it would have been a great opportunity but we can’t because of the transfer crossover.”
