Ian Watson confirms huge Huddersfield blow

Last week Ian Watson revealed that Huddersfield Giants could be about to lose one of their star players for three months in the shape of halfback Theo Fages who went off injured against Castleford Tigers.

At the time he said: “Theo we’re still waiting on a specialist report, he had a scan yesterday and we’re expecting it to be a high grade calf injury.

“When the specialist comes back to us we will have a full report on that one.”

Today, ahead of Huddersfield’s clash with Champions St Helens and Fages’ former club, Watson confirmed that it was indeed this expected injury and he was looking at a 10 week period off the field.

Watson said today: “It is definitely the meaty part of his calf so we will be looking at 10 weeks.”

He also confirmed that Jermaine McGillvary is creeping closer to a return:

“He should be getting close. His shoulder wasn’t right, so he saw a specialist. He has had an injection that we spoke about in the past.

“He has trained with the team and will do again tomorrow and we will up his contact training.”

Watson also confirmed that Josh Jones has been struggling with illness.

Jones went off with a head injury against Wigan Warriors but had next to no symptoms but there was a concern when he felt ill on Monday.

However, the Giants are confident that it is simply a generic illness.
