Ian Watson compares Super League stars to Luke Thompson

Ian Watson has compared a Leeds Rhinos star and a Huddersfield Giants star to former Super League Champion, Harry Sunderland Award winner and England international Luke Thompson.

Speaking about whether young props Tom Holroyd and Olly Wilson should be close to the England set up with Shaun Wane speaking about turning to a younger squad, Watson compared the two to Luke Thompson:

“I can only saw what I have seen about young Tom, but he plays 100 miles an hour similar to Olly Wilson, very similar to Luke Thompson to be fair

“I think they could be great for England going forward. There are a few other good young kids at both clubs.

“Obviously you have got Oledzki, Harry Rushton from us and Matty English.

“There are quite a few good young English middles knocking around there and between the clubs especially.”

Rohan Smith meanwhile said of Holroyd:

“He has been good, solid, physical. He looks pretty fit. He has had a season out of Super League but he has found some good rhythm but is performing at a good level.”

Asked if it would be a step up for Holroyd to play for England, Smith said:

“That’s not my area of expertise. I try and pick a team for Leeds every week and Tom certainly holds his place in our team.

“If they were playing Australia or New Zealand I would say that would be a massive step up, but they’re not.”
