Ian Lenegan: ‘Fixture switch cost Wigan £50,000’

Bad 24 hours for Rugby League

Wigan chairman Ian Lenegan believes the decision to switch last night’s fixture with Castleford from Friday to Thursday cost the club around £50,000, report Wigan Today.

The Warriors’ clash with the Tigers was only switched last weekend to accommodate the Sky Sports cameras and allow for tonight’s relegation battle fixtures to all kick off at the same time.

It was originally scheduled to kick off tonight at 7:45pm.

“The change to Thursday evening has undoubtedly affected many people and, financially, will affect Wigan as a club significantly to the tune of probably £50,000,” Lenagan wrote in last night’s matchday programme.

“We share with all fans the disappointment at the change but understand fully the right of our broadcaster, Sky, to select the games for TV and can well appreciate the consequential fairness of all the relegation games being scheduled simultaneously on Friday.

“Sky have been extremely helped in the changes sought this season and, I’m sure, will help next year again to gain even more mutual improvements as the new structures bed in.”
