“I wasn’t sure he had a future in Super League” – Carney praises player he wrote off

In many ways Salford Red Devils defy the odds.

The have one of the smallest budgets in Super League yet they have been one of the most competitive teams in Super League in the last five years.

In 2019 they made the Grand Final before backing that up with a trip to the Challenge Cup Final in 2020.

Many felt things were back to normal in 2021 before last year they reached the semi-finals and weren’t far from defeating St Helens.

The key to their success? Developing players others have perhaps turned their back on and one of those is prop Jack Ormondroyd.

Sky Sports presenter Brian Carney has said he was unsure of Ormondroyd’s future as a Super League until Rowley guided him:

“Jack Ormondroyd, I must admit I wasn’t sure he had a future in Super League but under Paul Rowley he has become a really capable prop.”

Terry O’Connor backed that up and was full of praise for the forward:

“Why over complicate what a prop’s role is? If you struggle with a pass in your game, just focus on the basics which is running hard and working hard.”

Ormondroyd has become a top prop at Salford and was awarded the number eight shirt ahead of the 2023 season.

Tyler Dupree is another example and he has been called up into Shaun Wane’s England squad.
