“I want to see a fair competition” – Lam outraged at sin-binnings and refereeing treatment

It’s fair to say that Wigan’s loss against St Helens experienced moments of controversy.

The Warriors had two players – Kai Pearce-Paul and Willie Isa – sin-binned for late tackles, but Wigan boss Adrian Lam believed that his side were harshly treated by referee James Child.

“It was a weird game, there were a lot of penalties against us at critical times,” Lam said.

“I felt like we should have had a few more go for us, it was inconsistent, but the players were courageous – they had a four-day turnaround whereas Saints have had three weeks off.

“It really frustrated me, there was nothing illegal about it (Kai Pearce-Paul’s tackle) at all; I’ll get some clarification because I didn’t see anything wrong with that.

“Il’l have to have a closer look at Willie Isa’s (yellow card), but I don’t think there was any intent in that either.

“Again it was another 20 minutes against Saints with one or two men off the field – let’s not just be sin-binning players for the sake of sin-binning.

“I want to see a fair competition, and there wasn’t anything wrong with both of them.”

The Wigan boss was, however proud of his side and senses a win is just around the corner.

“I was really proud of our aggression and there were signs that we will turn the corner.

“That was five losses in a row and we definitely don’t want to be there as a club, but there was definite encouragement.

“I know in my heart we will turn the corner very soon and we will get on a roll.”

Wigan did have Oliver Partington leave the field with concussion, but Lam said that he is fine.

“Ollie is walking around the dressing room, he’s in a position where he wasn’t good when it happened.

“I was worried it might have been some sort of bone structure damage, but that was all fine.”
