When a side hold’s a two score lead with just over two minutes remaining, the game is well and truly over but that kind of thinking has never fitted in where Leeds-Huddersfield games are concerned.
Over the last decade, Rhinos vs Giants games have produced some amazing finishes. We saw wild draws in 2014 and 2015. In the latter we were treated to a crazy last play go from Huddersfield attempting a drop goal to Rob Burrow being denied a winning try.
Also in 2014, a dramatic Tom Briscoe winner akin to the ‘Wide to West’ try was disallowed by the video ref whilst in the final game of 2015 Leeds won the League Leaders’ Shield thanks to a last second try from Ryan Hall against Huddersfield.
In more recent times, Leeds did the double over Huddersfield in 2020 winning both games thanks to a Luke Gale drop goal with the first coming in golden point after Leeds had battled back from 20 points down with 13 minutes remaining.
Even in 2021, Huddersfield beat Leeds 14-13 in a game with three late drop goals and in 2022 the drama continued with Huddersfield doing something quite unthinkable.
With 150 seconds left on the clock, Huddersfield trailed 20-10 and were set for a shock defeat against the struggling Rhinos. But a Luke Yates try gave them hope of the impossible and their dreams were realised when Innes Senior dived in at the corner in the final play of the 80 minutes.
Unfortunately for the Giants, Tui Lolohea missed the conversion and neither side could find a winner in golden point but it still made for an amazing moment and was a point which keeps Huddersfield inside the top four clear of the chasing pack.
It had Huddersfield fans delirious in the western end of the ground but the best reaction is perhaps from one commentary team which the Giants themselves have shared on social media.
It’s some of the most emotional commentary you’re ever going to hear and has been titled by the Giants’ creative social media team as ‘Innes Senior breaks a commentator.’
