Hull KR v Warrington Wolves team news as head coaches name Challenge Cup final squads

Challenge Cup

Willie Peters and Sam Burgess have named their respective Hull KR and Warrington Wolves squads for this weekend’s Challenge Cup final. The two sides will go head to head at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon for the first piece of silverware available this season.

It’s been 40 years since the Robins last brought a trophy back to Craven Park, while Warrington’s drought stands at six years having last won the Cup back in 2019. Both sides have lost at Wembley over the last couple of years, with KR being pipped by Leigh Leopards in 2023, while Wigan Warriors beat Warrington last year.

As such, they both have wrongs to right at the national stadium and they’ll be going all out to send their fans back up north happy.

There aren’t too many surprises with the 21-man squads, with both head coaches giving team news rundowns at Monday’s media event on the outskirts of Leeds.

As expected Hull KR have named Micky McIlorum in the side despite being just eight weeks into what was supposed to be a 12-week lay-off after undergoing surgery on a bicep injury. His inclusion comes as a big boost for Rovers but it remains to be seen if he will play for east Hull outfit on Saturday.

Jared Waerea-Hargreaves comes back into the fold, too, after serving a two-match suspension. There’s no Arthur Mourgue, of course, given he represented Catalans Dragons in the competition earlier in the season.

Peters has used the last few weeks to rotate his side somewhat and therefore a number of key men will be feeling fresh this weekend.

Burgess hasn’t made too many changes to his Warrington squad either. Of course, he has named George Williams in the squad after his seven-week recovery from ankle surgery and the stand-off is expected to lead the Wolves out on Saturday.

Lachlan Fitzgibbon is included after his injury scare last Friday, while Jordy Crowther and Toby King have been included despite there being question marks about their fitness. Speaking on Monday, Burgess admitted the final could be a stretch for both men, but they will be pushing to prove their fitness over the remainder of this week.

Tom Whitehead and Ben Harthill drop out, while Connor Wrench steps back into the fray.
