Hull KR and Wigan Warriors now both have 12 men after Hull KR skipper Shaun Kenny-Dowall was sin binned for taking out a Wigan chaser as the Warriors probed.
Though the Hull KR skipper was sin binned, the Warriors were not given a penalty try to the dismay of their fans.
They did nail a penalty via Harry Smith to make it 10-4.
The incident came as Wigan attacked after responding to going down to 12 men very well themselves.
It was a well placed grubber kick but didn’t yield the four points they wanted but it would be hard to claim that there would have been a definite try if not for SKD.
The Warriors were already down to 12 after Joe Shorrocks was sent off for a high tackle on Mikey Lewis.
Referee Liam Moore initially waved play on after the full blooded tackle from the substitute but when Lewis struggled to get back to his feet the incident was referred to the video referee Ben Thaler who spotted that Shorrocks had made contact with the head and thus the red card was shown.
The game has been a pulsating affair in the wet. The Robins could have been forgiven for feeling hard done by when Ryan Hall pulled out of the side late before kick-off but they stood up to early pressure before a delightful scrum move saw Louis Senior slide in at the corner.
Hall’s injury saw Mikey Lewis moved to fullback and Ethan Ryan moved to the wing. Lewis showed his worth with amazing footwork to confuse the Wigan chasers when they looked to trap him in goal.
Hull KR had the better of the first half but they were behind when Jai Field was given enough space to weave through and score in the corner.
Up against it at this point in the game, Shaun Kenny-Dowall turned the game when he intercepted but sadly he couldn’t go the distance but the Robins were now building pressure.
After absorbing a spell of pressure themselves, Wigan went down field and nailed a penalty to make it 8-4.
As aforementioned, the Warriors have now added to their lead after a second penalty from Harry Smith, his third goal of the game to give them a 10-4 lead despite the fact it still stands at just a try apiece at Headingley.
Despite Rovers also going down to 12 men for a period of ten minutes during Kenny-Dowall’s time in the sin bin, there were no further points for Wigan, the only six coming through Ethan Ryan’s try and Snyder’s conversion for Rovers to level it up.
As such the game went to golden point and just over a week after making himself a hero on Humberside when scoring the winning drop goal against Leeds, Brad Schneider once again sent Hull KR fans wild with a monster 40 metre drop goal to secure their place at Wembley.
It was a cruel way for the holders Wigan to get knocked out but they ultimately fell short 11-10 after golden point, with Rovers progressing to Wembley for the first time since 2015 where they’ll face Leigh.
