Hull KR star to make Super League switch at season’s end as CEO explains reasons for exit

Hull KR have confirmed that winger Joe Burgess will leave Craven Park at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old, who was still contracted to the Robins for 2027, will leave the reigning treble winners after three seasons, and has secured another opportunity elsewhere in Super League.

It has been widely reported that the Catalans Dragons could be his next destination, given the exits of Tommy Makinson, Solomona Faataape and Nick Cotric.

Burgess was a crucial part of the club’s conquering campaign last season, as he scored 24 tries in 25 games to help them to all three pieces of silverware.

Scoring in the World Club Challenge win over Brisbane Broncos, the winger has been one of the most prolific in Super League for years, and is currently 16th on the competition’s all-time top try scorers list.

Joe Burgess to leave Hull KR at end of season

Speaking on Burgess’ departure at the end of the season, Robins CEO, Paul Lakin, said: “Joe has been a fantastic player for us and will leave at the end of the season having been a cornerstone of our success over the last 3 seasons.

“Whilst Joe had one more year left on his contract, we recently engaged in open and transparent discussions with him and his manager to seek future opportunities elsewhere for 2027 onwards, due to our salary cap restrictions and our desire to add some more depth to the squad. As you would expect, there was no shortage of offers.”

“With so much still to play for in 2026 Joe, along with other departing players and staff, will receive the recognition and tribute he rightly deserves, addressing the fans at the end of the season.”
