Hull KR star makes huge future admission

Hull KR

Since leaving the NRL behind to join Leeds Rhinos in 2017, Matt Parcell has been one of the best number nines in the UK.

The hooker scored a record number of tries for a number nine in his first season before being named in the Dream Team and winning the Grand Final.

He has been a brilliant signing for Hull KR and last year the Robins signed him to a new deal fending off NRL interest.

The hooker has now made a huge admission on his future.

Speaking on his contract, he said: “I’m pretty happy. I’ve got another year so I haven’t really thought about it too much. I’ll get to the end of this year and next year and then see what happens.”

Asked if it is likely he’ll end career in NRL: “I don’t think so, that ship has probably sailed. I’ve enjoyed my time over here and I don’t think that will be an option really.

“It’s rugby league and you never say never but it’s not really something I’m looking at.

“To be honest I’ve never seen myself as someone who’s going to play until 34 or 35 like some of the other blokes in the team. I’ll get to the end of next year and see what happens there.”

Building on this point he admitted that he could retire at the end of next year:

“It could be, I haven’t made a decision but I don’t see myself playing on to be honest. It’ll be the end of next year or maybe one year after that but I can’t see myself playing beyond that.

What he’ll do when he retires: “Not into coaching. I’ve got a degree in civil engineering so engineering or project management side of things is what I’d lean towards at the moment. It’s still at least 18 months away and anything can happen so it may change.”
